A spectacular and exceptionally rare theatrical stage headdress from the early 20th century, associated with the legendary Lido de Paris.
Created for the glamorous world of the Parisian revue, the headdress is constructed on a delicate gold-toned metal framework and lavishly decorated with sparkling paste rhinestones. Its dramatic upward-sweeping design was made to catch and reflect the stage lights, creating a dazzling effect as the performer moved.
An especially wonderful original feature is the feather holder at the back, designed to accommodate the long and extravagant revue feathers or plumes that completed these spectacular stage costumes. The headdress could therefore be worn either as it survives today or transformed into an even more dramatic creation with towering feathers.
The open metal construction and long jeweled side sections allowed the piece to be securely positioned on the performer's head while maintaining an elegant and surprisingly lightweight appearance.
Original theatrical headdresses such as this are increasingly difficult to find. They were working costume pieces and were frequently altered, dismantled or reused for later productions.
