A charming and highly unusual 19th century French child’s mercerie sewing box, designed to unfold into a delightful miniature haberdashery shop.
When opened, the box reveals several pink shelves filled with an enchanting assortment of original sewing treasures, including lace, embroidery threads, ribbons, needles, and other tiny notions. In the lower compartment rests a small antique doll, adding even more charm to this whimsical piece.
The lid retains its original diagonal label reading “Mercerie”, identifying the box as a miniature French sewing shop. Such boxes were both educational and entertaining, teaching young girls the arts of sewing and embroidery while allowing them to play shopkeeper.
