A striking and unusually large articulated Koi fish brooch, crafted in China during the first half of the 20th century. The piece is made of solid silver (marked SILVER) with a rich gold wash and exquisitely hand-painted enamel in shades of lilac, ivory, turquoise, and coral.
Unlike many similar examples that were originally pendants, this particular fish was designed from the beginning as a brooch — as evidenced by the way the pin fitting is integrated into the body. It can, however, also be worn as a pendant on a chain, thanks to the discreet attachment points.
The craftsmanship is remarkable: every scale and fin is individually detailed, and the entire fish is fully articulated, allowing it to move fluidly from head to tail. The large, expressive bulging eyes, a signature trait of early examples, give it a lifelike and almost whimsical character.
The enamel remains in excellent antique condition, retaining its vivid colors and original luster. The fins are intact and finely chased, and the overall workmanship demonstrates the quality typical of early Chinese export silver pieces.
A rare and captivating piece of jewelry — both wearable and highly collectible — symbolizing prosperity, good fortune, and perseverance, as the koi fish has long represented in Asian culture.
