Pair of Unique French Folk Art Angel Plaques – Circa 1890
These two remarkable decorative pieces were crafted using large antique French earthenware lids, likely from old cooking or provisions pots. One of the lids is inscribed with the date 1899, which may correspond to when they were artistically embellished.
Each lid features a beautifully detailed paper image of a cherubic angel at the center—one with pink wings, the other in soft blue—surrounded by hundreds of hand-applied gold-toned seeds, creating a rich, textured halo effect. The original silk ribbons still remain attached to the ceramic handles, suggesting they were once displayed hanging.
A rare example of French rural folk art with a wonderfully romantic and nostalgic charm—perfect as wall decor or a centerpiece for collectors of curiosities and antique ephemera.
